Question

Are IQ tests timed?

Short answer

Some are, some are not. Workplace tests are tightly timed: the Wonderlic cognitive section gives 50 questions in 12 minutes and the CCAT 50 in 15. Classic Raven’s matrices are untimed. Clinical batteries like the WAIS-5 mix untimed subtests with timed ones and include processing speed tasks where speed is the point.

Timing on well-known tests

TestTiming
Wonderlic (cognitive section)50 questions in 12 minutes (Wonderlic: FAQ)
CCAT50 questions in 15 minutes (Criteria: CCAT prep)
UCAT (Criteria)40 questions in 20 minutes (Criteria: UCAT)
PI Cognitive Assessment50 questions in 12 minutes (Predictive Index: Cognitive Assessment)
Raven's (classic)Untimed (Pearson: Raven's brochure)
OLSAT 8Untimed, 75-minute maximum (Pearson: OLSAT 8)
CogATPrimary levels untimed; upper levels 10 minutes per subtest (Riverside: CogAT testing times)

Why some tests are built to be rushed

Employment tests often measure how much reasoning you can do quickly. On the CCAT, Criteria says fewer than 1% of candidates answer all 50 questions and the average test taker gets 24 right (Criteria: CCAT prep). The UCAT is designed so most people do not finish (Criteria: UCAT). Running out of time is normal on these tests, not a sign of failure.

Which tile completes the second pair?

Show the answer

The missing panel shows a large hatched diamond, with small solid shapes: a square at the bottom-right corner and a square at the right side (option 4).

How to solve it

  1. Compare the first two panels and name exactly what changed.
  2. The main shape and the small shapes swap forms: the main shape takes the form of the small ones, and the small ones take the form of the main shape.
  3. Nothing else changes.
  4. Apply the same change to the third panel: a large hatched square, with small solid shapes: a diamond at the bottom-right corner and a diamond at the right side.
  5. So the missing panel shows a large hatched diamond, with small solid shapes: a square at the bottom-right corner and a square at the right side.

That was 1 puzzle. The full test has 25.

Clinical tests: speed is one ability among several

Clinical batteries separate speed from reasoning. The WAIS-5 reports a Processing Speed index alongside Verbal Comprehension, Visual Spatial, Fluid Reasoning and Working Memory (Pearson: WAIS-5 overview), so a slow but careful reasoner can show a different profile from a fast, error-prone one. See processing speed.

Tips for timed tests

  • Do not get stuck: skip a hard item and come back if the test allows it.
  • Read the instructions on guessing; many tests count only right answers.
  • Practice the format with a timer: the Wonderlic-style and CCAT-style practice tests are timed per question.

Questions

Do you have to finish an IQ test to score well?

Not on speeded tests. Criteria says fewer than 1% of candidates answer all 50 CCAT questions, and its UCAT is designed so most people do not finish.

Is the IQ Octopus test timed?

Yes, loosely. Most people finish in about 12 minutes, and there is a hard cap of 20 minutes for the whole test.

Are untimed tests more accurate?

Not necessarily. Timing changes what a test measures: speeded tests reward quick processing, untimed tests focus on reasoning depth. Neither is simply better.
