Question

How much does an IQ test cost?

Short answer

A professional IQ assessment usually costs hundreds to a couple of thousand dollars, depending on who gives it and what else is included. Two university training clinics list psychoeducational evaluations at $600 and about $1,750. British Mensa’s supervised test costs 49 pounds. Online estimates range from free to a small one-time fee.

Which tile completes the grid?

Tap the option you think is right, or show the answer.

Show the answer

The missing tile has three outlined stars (option 1).

How to solve it

  1. Start with the first row and name what changes from tile to tile.
  2. Every row and every column contains each shape (circle, star and diamond) exactly once.
  3. Every row and every column contains each number of shapes (three, two and one) exactly once.
  4. The fill (outline) stays the same in every tile.
  5. Check the rules on the second row, then apply them to the third.
  6. So the missing tile has three outlined stars.

That was 1 puzzle. The full test has 25.

Why professional testing costs what it does

Clinical IQ tests are restricted. Pearson, for example, sells its highest-level tests, including the WAIS-5, only to people with a relevant doctorate and assessment training, a state license, or membership in a body such as the APA (Pearson: qualifications policy). Testing is often part of a longer assessment: Cleveland Clinic notes that neuropsychological testing often takes several hours (Cleveland Clinic: neuropsychological testing). Then the results are scored, interpreted and written up.

Questions

Why is a clinical IQ test so expensive?

You are paying for a trained professional’s time: testing, often several hours, plus scoring, interpretation and a written report. Tests such as the WAIS-5 can only be bought by qualified professionals.

Is there a cheaper professional option?

University training clinics often charge less than private practices. The two we checked listed $600 and about $1,750 for full psychoeducational evaluations.
