Taking the test
How long does the test take?
Most people finish in about 12 minutes. There are 25 puzzles and a hard limit of 20 minutes. If you reach the limit, the test submits what you have answered so far.
What does the test measure?
Reasoning with unfamiliar visual and numeric material, in five sections: Pattern Recognition (5), Abstract Reasoning (9), Spatial Reasoning (5), Quantitative Reasoning (3), Logical Reasoning (3). There are no words to read and no trivia, so vocabulary and schooling matter less than on many tests.
Does answering quickly raise my score?
No. Your estimated IQ depends on which puzzles you get right, weighted by how hard they are. Your pace is reported separately as a description and does not change the number. Unanswered puzzles count as wrong, so use the 20 minutes you have.
Can I go back and change an answer?
No. Once you confirm an answer the test moves on, which keeps the timing honest. On a phone you tap once to select and tap again (or press Next) to confirm, so a slip of the thumb does not count.
What happens if I close the tab or lose my connection?
Your progress is saved in your browser, so reopening the test on the same device picks up where you left off. The time limit keeps running while you are away.
Can I retake the test?
Yes. Every attempt gets newly generated puzzles, so you never see the same test twice. Expect a small bump on a retake: research on cognitive tests finds that retaking raises scores by about a quarter of a standard deviation on average, roughly 4 IQ points. We suggest waiting 30 days.
Is the test adjusted for age?
No. IQ Octopus does not ask your age and does not apply age norms the way clinical tests do. It is designed for adults. Clinical scores compare you with people your own age, so keep that difference in mind when you compare numbers.

Your result
How accurate is an online IQ test?
IQ Octopus gives an estimate and shows it as a range, not only a single number. Even clinical IQ tests given by psychologists report a confidence interval, often around plus or minus 5 points at 95%, because every test carries some measurement error. An online test adds more uncertainty, since you take it unsupervised, on your own device, with whatever distractions are around you.
What are the five-area scores?
Alongside your overall estimate, the full result rates each of the five sections on a 1 to 10 band with a plain label, so you can see where you were strongest. Section scores rest on fewer puzzles than the overall estimate, so treat them as a rough profile.
Why do different IQ tests give me different numbers?
Partly because scales differ. Most modern tests use a standard deviation of 15, but older Stanford-Binet forms used 16 and the Cattell Culture Fair III scale uses 24, so the same percentile prints as a different number. Tests also measure different mixes of abilities, and every score carries measurement error.
Can I use my result to join Mensa?
No. Mensa accepts people who score in the top 2% on an approved, supervised standardized test. IQ Octopus is not one of those tests. It also cannot be used for school placement, disability assessment or employment screening.
Is IQ Octopus a clinical test?
No. It is not a clinical or diagnostic instrument and is not given by a psychologist. If you need an IQ score for a diagnosis, an accommodation or an official purpose, a licensed psychologist can give you a standardized assessment.
Can I share my result?
Yes. Your result page has a share link and an image card. The shared view shows your score, percentile and curve only, never your section details, and you can turn sharing off.
