02 · The five plates
What we measure
Five kinds of reasoning, all with shapes and numbers instead of words, so what you know matters less than how you think.
- Plate I
Pattern Recognition
5 puzzlesA row of tiles changes by a rule. You pick the tile that comes next.
- Plate II
Abstract Reasoning
9 puzzlesA 3x3 grid has one cell missing. You find the rules across the rows and columns and complete it.
- Plate III
Spatial Reasoning
5 puzzlesYou pick the figure that is a rotation rather than a mirror image, and spot the one figure that breaks a shared property.
- Plate IV
Quantitative Reasoning
3 puzzlesA short series of numbers follows a rule. You work out the next number.
- Plate V
Logical Reasoning
3 puzzlesA changes into B. You apply the same change to C and pick the result.
03 · The curve
Where scores fall
IQ scores are set so the average is 100 and the standard deviation is 15. About 68% of people score between 85 and 115, and about 95% between 70 and 130 (the 68-95-99.7 rule). Your result shows where you sit on this curve.

Questions
How long does the test take?
Most people finish in about 12 minutes. There are 25 puzzles and a hard limit of 20 minutes. If you reach the limit, the test submits what you have answered so far.
Is the test free?
Taking the test is free and needs no sign-up. When you finish, your full result costs $4.95 one time: your estimated IQ, percentile, confidence range and five-area breakdown. There is no subscription and nothing renews.
How accurate is an online IQ test?
IQ Octopus gives an estimate and shows it as a range, not only a single number. Even clinical IQ tests given by psychologists report a confidence interval, often around plus or minus 5 points at 95%, because every test carries some measurement error. An online test adds more uncertainty, since you take it unsupervised, on your own device, with whatever distractions are around you.
Can I use my result to join Mensa?
No. Mensa accepts people who score in the top 2% on an approved, supervised standardized test. IQ Octopus is not one of those tests. It also cannot be used for school placement, disability assessment or employment screening.
Do I need an account?
No. You do not create an account or give an email to take the test. If you buy the full result, Stripe asks for an email at checkout and we send your permanent result link there.
Can I retake the test?
Yes. Every attempt gets newly generated puzzles, so you never see the same test twice. Expect a small bump on a retake: research on cognitive tests finds that retaking raises scores by about a quarter of a standard deviation on average, roughly 4 IQ points. We suggest waiting 30 days.
