IQ Octopus is a free online IQ test built from 25 visual and number puzzles. It is run by Sourdough AI LLC, a small software company in Warren, Rhode Island.

Who runs it

IQ Octopus is owned and operated by Sourdough AI LLC, 223 Child St, Warren, RI 02885. We build and run the test, write the guides and answer every support email ourselves. We do not sell ads, we do not sell personal data, and no page on this site is a paid placement.

What the test is

  • 25 culture-fair puzzles in five sections: patterns, matrices, spatial figures, number series and figure analogies. About 12 minutes for most people.
  • Every puzzle is generated fresh for each attempt from a rule template, so there is no answer key to look up.
  • Answers are scored with a Rasch model, and the result shows an estimated IQ with a confidence range around it. The methodology page has the technical detail, and how it works is the plain version.
  • Taking the test is free. The full result costs $4.95 once. There is no subscription and nothing renews. You can ask for a refund within 7 days.

What the test is not

  • It is not a clinical or diagnostic instrument, and it is not given by a psychologist.
  • It cannot be used for Mensa admission, school placement, disability assessment or employment screening.
  • We have not run a study comparing our scores with clinical IQ tests, so we do not claim any level of agreement with them. Your result is an estimate and we always call it one.

How we write the site

Every number on the site comes from a cited source or from the math of the normal curve. Drafts are produced with AI assistance and checked against the cited sources before they are published. The full rules are in our editorial standards, and every factual fix is listed on the corrections page.

Original research

We publish data we measure ourselves. The first study gave five AI models the same test people take and scored them with the same scorer. Read it in our research section. Journalists can find facts and logos in the press kit.
