Question
What IQ is considered genius?
Short answer
There is no official genius IQ score. The highest label on the WAIS-IV scale is Very Superior, for scores of 130 and above, which is about the top 2.5% of people. Any "genius" cutoff you see online, such as 140 or 160, is an informal convention, not a clinical category.

Where the word comes from, and where it does not
Test manuals use labels, not the word genius. The WAIS-IV groups scores into seven bands, from Extremely Low to Very Superior (Wikipedia: IQ classification). The top band starts at 130, two standard deviations above the mean of 100. From the normal curve, about 2.5% of people score in it. That is as high as the official labels go.
When a website or article names a genius threshold, it is borrowing an older or informal convention. You will see 140, 145 and 160 all used. None of them is a diagnosis, and none appears as a category on the WAIS-IV.

Which option is the same shape, only rotated?

Option 3 is the original figure turned a quarter turn clockwise.
How to solve it
- Pick a landmark: the marked cell or the end of the longest arm.
- Turn the figure in your head and watch where that landmark goes, and which side the other cells end up on.
- Turning the figure a quarter turn clockwise gives option 3.
- Each of the other options is a mirror image: flipping it over would match, but no turn does.
That was 1 puzzle. The full test has 25.
How rare are the scores people call genius?
| IQ | Percentile | About 1 in |
|---|---|---|
| IQ 130 | 97.7 | 44 |
| IQ 140 | 99.62 | 260 |
| IQ 145 | 99.87 | 740 |
| IQ 150 | 99.96 | 2,300 |
| IQ 160 | 99.997 | 32,000 |
These figures come from the shape of the bell curve with a standard deviation of 15, not from counting people. About 99.7% of people score between 55 and 145 (the 68-95-99.7 rule), so anything past 145 is far out in the tail.
Why very high scores are fuzzy
Every IQ score carries measurement error. Clinical manuals report a confidence interval, often around plus or minus 5 points at 95% (Wechsler, 2008), and the error grows at the extremes, where a test has few hard items left to separate people. A measured 142 and a measured 136 may not be meaningfully different. Read more in what is the highest possible IQ score and the guide to IQ classification.
A high score describes how you did on one kind of reasoning task compared with people your age. It says nothing about creativity, effort or what you will build with your ability.
