Question
Is IQ the same as intelligence?
Short answer
No. Intelligence is an ability; an IQ is a score from a test that measures part of it. IQ tests capture general reasoning ability, the g factor Spearman described in 1904, fairly well, but a score leaves out knowledge, skills, creativity, judgment and character. It is a useful measurement, not a complete description of a mind.

What an IQ score measures
In 1904 Charles Spearman proposed the general intelligence factor, g (Wikipedia: g factor). The idea is that a single general ability shows up across many different mental tasks, which is why people who do well on one kind of test tend to do well on others. IQ tests are designed to estimate this general ability by sampling several tasks.
Raymond Cattell later split ability into two kinds: fluid intelligence, reasoning with new material, and crystallized intelligence, using what you have already learned (Wikipedia: Fluid and crystallized intelligence). Nonverbal tests such as IQ Octopus lean on the fluid side. Read fluid vs crystallized intelligence and what is the g factor for more.

Which option is the same shape, only rotated?

Show the answer
Option 1 is the original figure turned a quarter turn counterclockwise.
How to solve it
- Pick a landmark: the marked cell or the end of the longest arm.
- Turn the figure in your head and watch where that landmark goes, and which side the other cells end up on.
- Turning the figure a quarter turn counterclockwise gives option 1.
- Each of the other options is a mirror image: flipping it over would match, but no turn does.
That was 1 puzzle. The full test has 25.
Why the score still matters
IQ is not everything, but it is not nothing. Across large groups it correlates with job performance at about 0.51 (Schmidt & Hunter, 1998), and with education at about 0.56 (Strenze, 2007). Those are among the stronger findings in psychology. They describe tendencies across many people, not certainties about one.
What it leaves out
- Knowledge and skills you have built in a particular field.
- Creativity, curiosity and taste.
- Motivation, persistence and the habits that turn ability into results.
- Social and emotional judgment.
A good way to hold it: an IQ is a measurement of how well you reason with unfamiliar problems compared with people your age, on a given day, with some error. That is genuinely informative and very far from a full account of a person. See what does an IQ test measure and does IQ predict success.
