Show the answer

The missing tile has two solid stars (option 1).

How to solve it

  1. Start with the first column and name what changes from tile to tile.
  2. Every row and every column contains each shape (star, diamond and square) exactly once.
  3. Every row and every column contains each number of shapes (one, two and three) exactly once.
  4. The fill (solid) stays the same in every tile.
  5. Check the rules on the second column, then apply them to the third.
  6. So the missing tile has two solid stars.

About this puzzle

Medium grids use a distribution of three on two attributes at once: each row and column holds three shapes, and three counts or fills, once each. It was generated by the same engine that builds the IQ Octopus test, from a fixed seed, so it stays the same every time you visit. In the real test, items like this are generated fresh for every attempt.
