Raw score
Definition
A raw score is the plain count of items you answered correctly on a test, before it is compared with anyone else. It is the starting point for an IQ, not the IQ itself. The same raw score can mean very different things on an easy test and a hard one.
Want your own number? The test is 25 visual puzzles, about 12 minutes, no sign-up.
From raw score to IQ
On a traditional test, your raw score is looked up in a table built from the standardization sample for your age. The table says where that raw score falls among your peers, and that rank becomes a deviation IQ on a scale with mean 100 and standard deviation 15 (Wikipedia: Intelligence quotient).
An example
Two people each get 18 of 25 items right. On a fixed-form test they would receive the same score. Under item response theory, the person whose correct answers came on harder items receives a higher ability estimate. That is one reason IQ Octopus, whose puzzles are generated fresh for each attempt, scores with a Rasch model rather than a simple count.
Common confusions
A raw score is not a percentage of intelligence, and an IQ is not a percentage of anything. Raw scores also rise with practice, which is why retests can look better without any change in ability: see practice effect. For how this works on IQ Octopus, read how the test works, or the answer to is an IQ score a percentage?

Option 2 is the original figure turned a half turn.
How to solve it
- Pick a landmark: the marked cell or the end of the longest arm.
- Turn the figure in your head and watch where that landmark goes, and which side the other cells end up on.
- Turning the figure a half turn gives option 2.
- Each of the other options is a mirror image: flipping it over would match, but no turn does.
That was 1 puzzle. The full test has 25.
